Automated vehicles: Level 2 driving systems

20 January 2021

This is the first of four scheduled events during 2021 in which we set to explore the breadth of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) levels of driving automation and associated human factors considerations.

At this event, focused on SAE Level 2 (partial driving automation), we’ll be discussing the National Transportation Safety Board’s investigation of a fatal crash involving a Tesla Model X using the ‘Autopilot’ system in Mountain View, California. Examining the driving system from a human factors perspective, we uncover oversights in the preliminary investigation and discuss the implications for the future design of partially automated vehicles.

It is not enough to merely identify problems; we must also work towards solutions. This event will feature presentations from three experts from industry and academia. They will share how they are working to solve challenges currently facing the automotive industry leading to the development of safe and pleasurable automated vehicles.

You’ll hear success stories about the important role of human factors for future vehicles and developments in:

✓ Human Machine Interface for Human-Machine shared driving responsibility.
✓ Driver State Monitoring for automated vehicles.
✓ Trust and Acceptance of automated vehicles.
✓ Driver familiarisation with increasingly complex vehicles.
✓ Standardisation and regulation for automated vehicle technologies.
